Why this matters
More people ask AI tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overviews for recommendations before they open a search engine at all. When someone asks for a good option in your category, the AI answers from what it has already picked up: outside coverage, reviews, and content that plainly answers real questions. If none of that exists for your brand, the AI has nothing to recommend, so it recommends someone else.
This is sometimes called GEO, short for generative engine optimization. It runs alongside regular SEO but rewards different things: being mentioned by others, answering real buyer questions directly, and showing up in comparisons, more than keywords and backlinks alone.
This is a quick self-check based on common GEO practices. It is not a live scan of ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews.
What is generative engine optimisation?
The two disciplines overlap but they are not the same job. A page can rank third on Google and never be cited by an AI engine, because ranking rewards authority and relevance while citation rewards extractability: short, self contained statements a model can pull out without needing the paragraph around them.
How is GEO different from SEO?
| Dimension | Classic SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank high enough to earn the click | Be quoted inside the answer |
| Unit that competes | The page | The individual passage |
| Rewards | Authority, links, relevance | Clarity, specificity, self contained claims |
| Format that wins | Depth and coverage | Question headings with direct answers under them |
| Measured by | Rankings, clicks, impressions | Whether your brand appears in AI answers |
The practical consequence is that the same content can be rewritten for GEO without losing SEO value. You are not choosing between them. You are adding structure the answer engines can use.
What does this GEO readiness score check?
- Question shaped headings. A heading that reads as a question matches the way people prompt an AI, which makes the passage under it a candidate answer.
- Direct answers. A 40 to 60 word statement directly under the heading, understandable on its own, with no “as mentioned above”.
- Specific facts. Numbers, dates, named entities and prices. A model quotes “$99 per user per month”, not “quite expensive”.
- Structured data. FAQPage and Article schema tell a parser what the page contains without it having to infer.
- Freshness and provenance. A visible publish or update date and a stated source for claims raise the chance a model treats the page as trustworthy.
- Clean structure. Tables, short paragraphs and lists extract far more reliably than long unbroken prose.
How do you improve a low score?
Work in this order, because the first two items do most of the work.
- Rewrite your headings as questions. “Pricing” becomes “How much does it cost?”. This is the single cheapest change with the largest effect.
- Add an answer block under each one. Two to three sentences that stand alone. If you deleted the rest of the page, that block should still make sense.
- Replace vague claims with figures. “Most marketers” becomes a number with a source. Vague claims are unquotable.
- Add FAQ schema. Turn your real questions into structured data rather than inventing questions to fill it.
- Show the date. An undated page reads as stale to both crawlers and models.
For a worked example of the format, the comparison of the best free social media schedulers uses question headings with a boxed answer under each one, which is the structure this score is looking for.
Frequently asked questions
Does GEO replace SEO?
No. Search engines still send the majority of traffic to most sites. GEO adds a second surface where your brand can appear, and the structural changes it requires tend to help traditional rankings as well.
Can you pay to appear in AI answers?
Not for the organic citations this score measures. Some AI products carry separate advertising, but being quoted inside an answer is earned through content, not bought.
How long does it take to see a change?
Longer than SEO in most cases, because a model has to re index or retrieve your page before it can quote it. Retrieval based engines such as Perplexity can reflect a change within days. Model training cycles take much longer.
Does schema markup guarantee a citation?
No. Schema makes a page easier to parse, which improves the odds. The content itself still has to be specific and worth quoting.
Is this score an official Google or OpenAI metric?
No. It is a practical checklist built from the structural signals that repeatedly show up in cited content. Treat it as a diagnostic, not a guarantee.
